Defenders of Wildlife has been profiled for its “nightmare” workplace environment that has cultivated a “culture of fear” according to a new Politico news article. This is not the first time the national conservation organization has come under fire for its staff policies. Last year Defenders of Wildlife was publicly rebuked for  its treatment of staff of color.

Today Green 2.0 released new diversity and inclusion data from environmental NGOs and foundations, indicating slight progress with staff of color represented at NGOs while foundations are disproportionately funding more white-led organizations than groups led by people of color.

Green 2.0 partnered with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to bolster his effort to successfully adopt a U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) resolution that includes pushing for more diversity in environmental NGOs and foundations.

Green 2.0 believes fair and inclusive workplace cultures are vital to upholding the labor rights and health of workers and to advance climate action. While the Sunrise Movement has mobilized countless young people for climate action, effective leadership requires inclusive solutions and equitable practices.

“Environmental organizations cannot continue to allow fear to define workplaces for staff of color,” Jimenez said. “Unfortunately, in the case of Defenders of Wildlife, as with many other environmental organizations, the intimidation and culture of fear came directly from the top. Leadership of environmental organizations cannot on one hand say they want to diversify and on the other suppress the voices of their staff of color and prevent real action on diversity, inclusion, and racial equity.”
