ABOUT THE EXPERT:

Deeohn Ferris has extraordinary experience in over a dozen countries on five continents creating partnerships and collaborating with civil society, communities of color, Tribal, indigenous and faith-based organizations, governments, NGOs, philanthropy, and corporate stakeholders. She is an environmental lawyer by trade, a racial and social justice practitioner, and systems change thought leader. Her career is rooted in community building and economic and environmental justice.

Deeohn is the immediate past President of the global intermediary, the Institute for Sustainable Communities. She is the first African American woman to helm a US-based international climate change organization. Deeohn’s expertise is interdisciplinary, spanning a background in government, the nonprofit and private sectors, and social impact entrepreneurship. She was an environmental justice pioneer well before equity was a thing. She is deeply knowledgeable about tackling the inclusion and rights of those historically left behind, and the green nonprofit sector’s diversity challenges.

Her mission is securing economic prosperity, health, and the benefits of nature for every neighborhood, strengthening the agency of communities and cross-disciplinary stakeholders to implement equitable climate solutions and strategies, and shaping policies, investments, and partnerships that secure the resiliency of Black people, people of color, and marginalized populations worldwide. Deeohn is based in Washington, DC.
