Green 2.0 Releases New Tool to Support Demographic Data Collection Efforts
Washington, D.C. — Today Green 2.0, an advocacy organization working to increase racial and ethnic diversity among environmental groups, released a new guide designed to support and fill in the gap of demographic data collection efforts taking place at foundations and nonprofit organizations.
Tracking Diversity: The Green 2.0 Guide to Best Practices in Demographic Data Collection will help organizations with their strategic planning, assessing the growth of their staff and board, and analyzing the metrics of their demographic data.
“We heard from environmental foundations and NGOs big and small that they needed support with their demographic data collection efforts,” said Green 2.0 Executive Director Andrés Jimenez. “Although green organizations are trending better in terms of increasing staff diversity, there are gaps that must be addressed at all levels. Not only will this new tool simplify data collection efforts, but it will also enable more organizations to create, track, and meet their equity goals.”
“Climate justice work requires that we hold ourselves accountable to the communities of color on the frontlines of climate change,” said Surdna Foundation President Don Chen. “I encourage everyone in the sector to join Surdna in sharing their demographic data with Green 2.0 and using this Tracking Diversity guide to accelerate that process. In doing so, we can forge the multi-racial coalitions necessary to realize healthier, more sustainable communities.”
“No organization can be effective, relevant and just, if it is not living out a true commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion,” said Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen. “We think that the Tracking Diversity guide that Green 2.0 has developed will provide an essential tool to help organizations strengthen their work and reflect the true breadth and depth of the environmental movement.”
“Diversity comes in all forms and it is our responsibility as leaders, staff, and as climate justice advocates to be reflective of the movement we work in,” said Our Climate Executive Director Jasmine Sanders. “If you don’t know the data, then your organization can’t continuously improve and show the true palette of what the climate justice movement looks like. Green 2.0’s new guide is a tool organizations can intentionally use to help them gather and think about internal demographic data easier. It’s the first of its kind and a much-needed resource.”
