Internships play a crucial role in the pathway to careers in the environmental sector, but far too often, they are not accessible to or reflective of the diverse cultures and backgrounds of aspiring young professionals. Systemic barriers, including lack of diversity and inclusion in organizations, unpaid internships, advantages of having pre-existing networks, and prohibitive requirements of prior experience, make it difficult for young people from marginalized communities to enter the movement. Join Green 2.0, WWF, BlackOak Collective, and Pay Our Interns for a conversation with current and former interns of color on their experiences in the environmental movement, what needs to be done to create inclusive internship opportunities and to highlight resources and programs available to support young people of color.
