ABOUT THE EXPERT:

Charles Costen- Sumpter (He/Him/His) is Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Charles joined WWF in 2022 and has responsibility for the overall development and implementation of strategies and initiatives that advance DEI both internally and externally, while also working to foster an environment where WWF is employer of choice. Prior to joining WWF, Charles was in the consulting field managing DEI and human capital related transformation programs with both Deloitte Consulting and Booz Allen Hamilton. Charles began his career working for Representative Charles Rangel. In this role, he worked to expand access to capital for small, disadvantaged businesses. Charles later worked for the DC City Council where he helped to pass the landmark Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Act of 2009 otherwise known as the Plastic Bag Tax, an effort to change consumer behavior and reduce single-use disposable bags. At the U.S. Department of Defense, Charles advised senior department leadership on human capital & DEI initiatives. Charles recently joined the board of directors of Nature Forward and serves as chairman of Safe Space NOVA, a northern Virginia nonprofit focused on providing safe and accepting spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth. In addition to his community work, Charles is also an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) qualified administrator and has completed the IDI qualifying seminar for administration and interpretation of the Intercultural Development Inventory. A resident of Fairfax County, Virginia, Charles is a graduate of the Political Leaders Program at the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. He holds a BA in Political Science & East Asian student from Union College and an MS in Management from the Catholic University of America.
