ABOUT THE EXPERT:

Mr. Thoumi is a former global mutual fund investment research manager, correspondent banker, and trader who since 2006 has solely focused on developing and deploying innovative financial structures to address the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable and equitable future via thematic investing, carbon markets, ETFs, green bonds, and other investment tools.


He has led the deployment of more than $3 billion in sustainable finance while advising over 40 corporations in the S&P 500 on ESG, sustainability and climate. He has co-filed over 35 proxies enabling corporations to be more sustainable and address climate risks.


He is a member of various Fortune 500, scientific, and financial technical committees including the S&P Sustainable Finance Scientific Council. He has published over 70 thematic investment reports addressing sovereign debt, energy transition, climate risk, chemicals/plastics, municipal finance, financial accounting, deforestation, food and agriculture supply chains, natural capital, and other topics. He has also edited two finance textbooks – one each on oceans and land.


He has been part of numerous award-winning ESG, sustainability, and climate investment research teams (Lipper: 2013, Rockefeller Natural Capital: 2014, Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance: 2015, Environmental Finance: 2020, Environmental Finance: 2021, Gotham: 2021, and Crea nominee: 2023).


Mr. Thoumi has been a keynote speaker, moderator, and panelist at numerous global forums including Davos WEF, UNFCCC, NYSE, IETA, GARP, CFA Institute, PRI, NYC Climate Week, GreenFin, Seafood Legacy (Japan), Chemicals Watch (EU), CDP (Sao Paulo), Innovation Forum (UK), and other events.


He lectures at Johns Hopkins University teaching two courses: Financing a Sustainable World and ESG Integration and has guest lectured at the University of Chicago, Yale University, Columbia University, University of Michigan, University of Oxford, and other universities.


He has an MBA and Master of Science in natural resources in sustainable systems from the University of Michigan. He has served as a political appointee to various Washington DC regional urban planning and climate advisory commissions advising on climate change, environment, energy, and air quality issues impacting 5.5 million people. He is a former Erb Institute, NSHMBA, and Consortium fellowship recipient.


Before working in sustainable finance, Gabriel had a successful career first as a junior science officer assessing ocean health in the North Atlantic and then as an art history consultant.
