ABOUT THE EXPERT:

My name is Mercedes Morin, and I am an incoming Environmental and Conservation Sciences graduate student at North Dakota State University and a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. My research focuses on optimizing Indigenous foods for improved glycemic control and cognitive improvement, reducing non-communicable diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease that disproportionately affect Indigenous people, while also investigating if these foods are more climate resilient as we face climate change. Through this research, I aim to address the widespread health disparities Indigenous peoples face by utilizing Indigenous knowledge and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
