ABOUT THE EXPERT:

Dr. Michelle Dovil is currently a research scientist and professor at Howard University. Born and raised in Miami, FL, she has always had an interest in both the social and natural sciences. She received her Baccalaureate degree in Sociology, with a minor in Women’s Studies from the University of Florida. Go Gators! Dr. Dovil later moved to Washington, DC, where she received her Master’s degree and Doctorate in Sociology from Howard University. Although Michelle’s formal concentrations are in Criminology and Social Inequality, her personal research interests are in environmental justice, disasters and climate change.

She has worked on several projects both domestically and internationally in places that include Washington, DC; New Orleans, LA; Norman, Oklahoma; Sendai, Japan, etc. Moreover, as an academic, Dr. Dovil has worked on several research projects centered on the social impacts of severe weather; protective action and evacuation responses of disaster victims; as well as other environmental Justice issues. She has received federal funding from both the Department of Homeland Security and National Science Foundation.
