ABOUT THE EXPERT:
Through her work as a speaker, organizer, and activist, Paula has devoted herself to advocating for the advancement of environmental justice principles in public policy and planning. She is employed with the Hoosier Environmental Council, an environmental advocacy organization and has led successful campaigns to stop development projects that would expose marginalized communities to additional pollution or noxious land uses. Additionally, Paula’s work includes the promotion of green infrastructure, climate justice, and meaningful community engagement. She is also committed to mentoring students interested in careers in environmental justice.
Born and raised in Indianapolis, Brooks is a graduate of Howard University where she earned a BBA in finance and a MA in development policy and planning. Brooks’ professional experience includes work in municipal finance, local government, and community development. An Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Senior Fellow and a member of the People’s Solar Energy Fund’s (PSEF) Movement for Solar Capacity and Leadership (MSCL) national cohort, she also serves on several civic boards including the Marion County (Indianapolis) Tree Board and the Indiana Community Forestry Advisory Committee. Brooks has received numerous awards for her work in environmental justice and was named a 2021 Hoosier Resilience Hero by Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI).
