Grassroots Movement Organization Under Fire for Culture of Discrimination

Washington, D.C. – In response to allegations that the Sunrise Movement’s national organization and local chapters are home to a significant lack of racial and ethnic diversity among staff with decision-making power and discrimination against staff of color, allegations lodged against the organization by Sunrise’s employees of color, Green 2.0 issued the following statement by Andrés Jimenez, Executive Director of Green 2.0:

“Green 2.0 believes fair and inclusive workplace cultures are vital to upholding the labor rights and health of workers and to advance climate action. While the Sunrise Movement has mobilized countless young people for climate action, effective leadership requires inclusive solutions and equitable practices. The allegations of racism and discrimination by staff of color must be addressed, immediately, as well as the lack of representation in leadership positions to ensure more racially and ethnically diverse decision-making power.”

Green 2.0 is a 501(c)3 independent advocacy campaign working to increase racial diversity among environmental organizations. Green 2.0 believes in a powerful, winning environmental movement grounded in equity and inclusion. Follow Green 2.0. on TwitterFacebook, and LinkedIn.
