The Natural Resources Defense Council and Earthjustice are among several environmental groups committing to ensuring employees of color earn as much as their white counterparts. The groups will within one year outline how they will improve pay equity as part of the pledge, led by Green 2.0, a group that focuses on improving diversity within the environmental movement.

Andres Jimenez, Green 2.0’s executive director, said the pledge is a good first step to address gender and racial imbalances that still plague the green groups even years after the #MeToo movement and the murder of George Floyd elevated those issues in the public consciousness.

“It’s important for the environmental sector because historically it’s been a place where equity across the board hasn’t been there,” Jimenez said. The pledge, which launched in July, now stands at 37 groups, including the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, Environmental Defense Fund and The Nature Conservancy.
